I'm still not convinced...

... that DCOs through formidable VCFs are inferior to VCOs.  I site: The Novation A Station, the Korg Poly 800, the Korg DW 6000 and DW 8000, among plenty of others.  Maybe it's my taste in synths, or my taste in music made by particular synths, but I feel that the filter is where it's at, not the oscillator.

I shall update this diatribe, following some hardcore synthery on Friday night with Red Sea Radio!

  1. I'm with you on that. If the Osc is doing its job right, it's providing a predictable, repeatable, and all around boring set of spectra. The art and nuance are in the transformations to the spectrum.
I kind of think of digital as artificial flavoring and analog as an aged liqour. The analog can be complicated, weird, funky, and hard to reproduce, and at its best deep and distinctive. Cheap digital is the kool-aid flavor of audio processing - though they're getting pretty damn good at reproducing the flavor formulas of analog these days.... And sometimes kool-aid is what hits the spot too...
